VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A 15-year-old Virginia Beach boy has died after he was injured in a fire at his home on Thursday morning.

Calls reporting the fire at a residence in the 3900 block of Hedgefield Court came in at 8:30 a.m.

The fire was in the backyard of the home and there was no structural damage reported.

Virginia Beach Police say the victim was on fire and the fire was quickly extinguished. The boy died at the hospital.

The fire was not suspicious and no foul play is suspected. The boy's death is believed to be a suicide.

According to an official with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the boy was a student at Green Run High School. This message was sent to parents today.

Good afternoon – This is Todd Tarkenton, principal of Green Run High School. It is with a heavy heart I call you today. As some of you may have seen through media reports, one of our freshman students passed away today in a fire at his home. Undoubtedly, this loss will weigh heavily on our students, staff and family here at Green Run. We will have additional counselors at the school tomorrow if any student needs to talk. Our administrators will also be in the hallways and classrooms to check in on students throughout the day. This is certainly a sad day for our school community, so, I ask that we keep this family and our Green Run family in our thoughts as we continue on. Thank you for your support of Green Run High School.
