VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A posting on the "Nextdoor" app says several cars were recently broken into along Shore Drive.

Part of the warning for neighbors reads: "Be aware, keep porch lights on & vehicle alarms activated!!"

Virginia Beach police confirm five break-ins were reported on Monday.

"I felt kind of weird," said Bill Verbeley. Thieves stole checkbooks out of his SUV, which he swears is always locked. "Either they're smart enough to use a slim jim or some other technique that they got in and didn't leave behind any marks."

His neighbor, Bob Gulledge, also says his checkbook was taken, but nothing more valuable. "It's a little disconcerting when you know your information is out there, your name and address," he said.

Neighbors called their banks to cancel any potentially compromised accounts and say they're considering adding security cameras.
