NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk City Council is expected to vote to accept state funds to purchase the schooner Virginia,  a replica of the last pilot vessel to sail the Chesapeake Bay in the 1920s.

The city will grant the funds to the Nauticus foundation.

Nauticus Executive Director Stephen Kirkland says they want to utilize the schooner Virginia in their sailing program. They would use the ship to teach children leadership skills and how to work as a team.

The ship would be based in Norfolk on the Elizabeth River.

The schooner Virginia is a 122′ foot replica of the 1917 Virginia Pilot schooner of the same name. It was listed for sale with Sparkman and Stephens, LLC.
