Police: Man arrested after robbing Edenton store at gunpoint, fleeing in clerk’s car

Edenton, N.C. – A man was arrested Friday after police say he robbed a store and then off in the clerk’s car.

The suspect is Kelvin Eugene Singleton, 26, of Edenton.

According to a news release from the Edenton Police Dept., officers were called about an armed robbery at Pearls Tobacco Plus on Granville St. Friday around 9:30 p.m.

A man had entered the store armed with a gun and demanded money from the clerk.  The man then forced the clerk outside and tried to make him get into the clerk’s vehicle as well.

The clerk refused, so the robber took the keys and fled the scene in the clerk’s car.

Edenton Police notified other agencies to be on the lookout.

According to police, about half an hour later, Singleton was apprehended in Windsor, N.C. by officers of the Windsor Police Dept. while he was trying to purchase gas for the stolen car.

Singleton is charged with armed robbery, attempted kidnapping and larceny of motor vehicle.

Police also discovered that Singleton was wanted by the Charlotte, N.C. Police Dept. for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and other weapon violations.

He is being held in the Chowan County Jail under a $500,000 bond.
