Newport News, Va. –  18-year-old Jalon Wright  was killed early Sunday morning in the first homicide of the year in Newport News.

Police received several calls of a shooting in the 500 block of Turnberry Boulevard shortly before 2am. When officers arrived they found Wright inside a home suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to an area hospital where he later pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Wight was apparently in the backyard of a residence when someone in a dark colored vehicle traveling on Turnberry Boulevard fired several rounds towards the home.

Neighbors tell Newschannel 3 that they heard 8 shots fired around the time Wright was shot.

“First I heard it sounded like two quick ones and then right behind that it was just immediate it could have been 8 or so,” explained neighbor, David Reid. “They were just repetition, quickly.”

There is no suspect information and it is unknown at this time if Wright was the intended target of the shooting.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to please call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
