Shots fired in Newport News strike house, vehicle

Newport News, Va. - Police say several rounds fired by unknown individuals hit a vehicle and the upstairs of a residence.

Dispatch received several calls about gun shots in the area of Ivy Avenue and Ridley Circle just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police found several casings when they arrived at the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed that one of the rounds fired hit an upstairs residence in the 600 block of Ridley Circle. People were in the house at the time, but there were no injuries.

Another bullet struck the rear window of a car parked in the 1500 block of Ivy Avenue. A husband, wife and three kids were in the car when the shots were fired. A 4-year-old child was struck by glass fragments and was taken to the hospital for examination.

Investigators don't know the reason for the shooting or who the intended targets were at this time. There is no suspect information.
