Norfolk, Va. – A male employee of Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) has been taken to the hospital after being injured in an industrial accident.

Units responded to NIT around 8:00 a.m.

The worker was inside of a straddle carrier– a machine used to pick up, move or stack large cargo containers–at the time of the incident

The straddle carrier was about 50 feet in the air when it struck the lowering mechanism of a gantry crane, injuring the worker.

The damage from the impact of the crane on the straddle car required firefighters to use cutting tools to get the worker out of the from the carrier’s cab.

The fire department used a bucket truck to reach the injured worker.  The truck safely lowered him onto ground level.

Officials say the man is conscious, able to speak and only suffered minor injuries.  He was evaluated by medics at the scene and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
