Flood Warning issued for Blackwater River and Chowan Basin

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a flood warning for the Blackwater River above Franklin and the Chowan Basin.

The warning affects the cities of Franklin and Suffolk and Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties.

Please use extreme caution if venturing near riverbanks. Move to higher ground immediately should rising water threaten your safety.

At 10:45 AM Tuesday the river stage was 10.4 feet. Flood stage is 10.8 feet.

The river is expected to rise above flood stage by this evening and continue to rise to near 10.9 feet after midnight tonight, and will fall below flood stage by late Wednesday morning.

At 10.8 feet A portion of Barretts Landing River Walk is inundated in Downtown Franklin. This river level is comparable to a previous crest of 11.3 feet on May 2 2014.
