Norfolk, Virginia – A car overturned Thursday morning at the intersection of Tidewater Drive and Philpotts Road in Norfolk, knocking down a light pole.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident, according to Norfolk police.

It happened this morning around 6 a.m. Crews responded to the intersection of Tidewater Drive and Philpotts Road.

The investigation reveals that a man was driving a Pontiac G6 southbound on Tidewater Drive when he took his eyes off the roadway to look at his cell phone. Once he looked back up, he realized that the vehicles in front of him had stopped. He attempted to swerve to avoid a rear-end collision, however, he lost control, ran off the roadway, and struck a light pole, police say. The pole fell down, blocking southbound Tidewater Drive. His vehicle flipped upside down, and continued to slide, striking two cars that were stopped in the roadway: a Hyundai Accent and a Toyota 4 Door.

The man driving the Pontiac was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was issued a summons for Reckless Driving/Fail to Maintain Control, police say.

There were no other injuries reported in this crash, and the two other vehicles involved had minor damage, NewsChannel 3 has learned.

The roadway has since been reopened.
