Elizabeth City, N.C. – A psychiatric patient shot herself in the knee Sunday afternoon at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Pasquotank County.

Around 3 p.m., Pasquotank County Sherriff Randy Cartwright said a female patient was being transferred for a medical evaluation when she “lost control,” and took a Pasquotank County deputy’s firearm.  She then accidentally shot herself.

The patient is being transferred to the Greenbrier Trauma Facility for treatment.

The deputy suffered several bite marks and abrasions, but is expected to be okay.

No charges have been filed at this time as an investigation is underway.
