Norfolk, Va. – A Norfolk man got a huge surprise at his local grocery store recently, NewsChannel 3 has learned.

He won the lottery!

Charles Durr won the $1 million prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Gold Scratcher game.

It happened with a ticket he bought at Harris Teeter, located at 1320 Colonial Avenue in Norfolk.

“At first I didn’t want to believe it,” he said as he claimed his prize. “Inside you want to explode. I was out in the parking lot laughing.”

Durr had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years, or a one-time cash option of $548,500 before taxes. He chose the cash option.

The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket, officials say.

Durr said he plans to use his winnings to pay bills, and perhaps to take a ‘long-overdue vacation’.

Gold is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 up to $1,000,000. This is the second top prize claimed in this game, which means one million-dollar prize has yet to be claimed, Lottery officials say.
