Newport News, Va. - The Newport News Fire Department's Marine Incident Response Team and Hazardous Materials Team along with the U.S. Coast Guard and Virginia Marine police are currently working to contain a spill in the “Small Boat Harbor” located in the 1000 Block of Terminal Avenue in the harbor.

The spill was reported by an adjacent business around 11:12 a.m.

When units arrived, they found a dense black colored film on the water. The spill is believed to be a petroleum product.

At this time it is not clear where the spill originated, nor is the quantity of product that is in the water known.

The fire department's Hazmat Team is working with the Marine Incident Team and the Coast Guard to deploy booms in order to contain the spill.

Absorbent booms and absorbent pads are also being utilized to remove the substance from the water.
