Virginia Beach, Va. - Demolition of the Cavalier Oceanfront Hotel started Monday.
The 11-story tower on the Virginia Beach oceanfront at 42nd Street and Atlantic Avenue is being torn down to make way for new improvements to the Cavalier property.
Last year, Gold Key | PHR Hotels and Resorts announced that the Cavalier Oceanfront Hotel will be rebuilt and called the Oceanfront Marriott Hotel. That hotel is expected to open in 2017.
Next door is the Cavalier Beach Club and Convention Center, which is undergoing a $4 million facelift.
The historic Cavalier is expected to reopen in 2016.
