Elizabeth City, NC – A 24-year-old student at Elizabeth City State University was found dead in his dorm room Friday night, according to ECSU Police.

University police were sent to the dorm room around 8:00 p.m. Friday night for a wellness check.

When they arrived, they found 24-year-old Cortez Markie Pierce of Roanoke Rapids, deceased inside the room.

He resided in a single dorm room. ECSU Chief John Manley stated they do not suspect any foul play.

University Police and Elizabeth City Police Department are jointly investigating his death. As standard procedure, an autopsy will be done to determine the nature of his death.

Chancellor Stacey Franklin Jones states, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Cortez. The completion of the investigative process will assist us all in achieving closure. As we wait patiently on the same, we continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to the Pierce family and his many friends here at ECSU.”

Chancellor Jones, staff from the Division of Student Affairs and University Police, met with the Pierce family and provided their support.
