East Point, Ga. – An East Point, Georgia police detective and member of the SWAT team, is now on the organ donor list after he was run over by suspects during a traffic stop 12 years ago.

“It was a Cadillac Catera. I remember the car got hit by the vehicle, went up in the air, hit head-on,” Detective Toure Heywood told WSBTV’s Liz Artz. “I woke up a couple days later. I was in ICU, groggy. I open my eyes, they had me in isolation.”

As a result he needs five major organs: stomach, liver, pancreas, upper bowel and lower bowel.

The transplant could cost tens of thousands of dollars (insurance will not cover many costs). Two major campaigns have started. His family has set up a GoFundMe accountand the hospital has also set up a nonprofit to help cover the expenses.

Heywood is a former Marine, father and husband. Living proof that even police officers need help, too.
