Newport News, Virginia - One person was killed in an accident on the James River Bridge, southbound Route 17 shortly after midnight.

All lanes on the James River Bridge were blocked for several hours while crews cleared the accident.

Police have identified the victim as 57-year-old Kinith Booker of Hampton. Virginia State Police say Booker was driving the wrong way on the bridge and hit a pickup truck head on.

The woman driving the truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Jacqueline Jones was on her way home from work around midnight, crossing the James River Bridge, when she narrowly avoided a speeding car going the wrong way.

"It looked like it was going about 100 miles an hour," she says.

Jones called 911 to warn about the driver at exactly 12:02 a.m.

Virginia State Police say they responded to what ended up being a fatal accident on the bridge at 12:23 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation. State Police say alcohol was not a factor.
