Newport News, Va. (WTKR) - Police in Newport News are investigating a series of catalytic converter thefts reported over the Thanksgiving Holiday in the Oyster Point area.

Police say the thefts were reported between November 26 and December 1 along Canon Boulevard and Fishing Point Drive.

Virginia Home Medical, Precipitation Unlimited Inc., Gift Auto Detail Center and VersAbility Resources all reported having catalytic converters stolen off business vehicles.

Glenn Gross is the owner of Percipitation Unlimited Inc.

He tells NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo that employees came in Monday morning and tried to start the trucks before discovering the problem.

After filing a police report, he took action against crime and personally visited scrapyards on the Peninsula in the hopes of making it hard for the thief or thieves to profit by cashing in on the precious metals inside the catalytic converters.

"To make it as difficult on them as they have made it on me and some of the other businesses that were hit over the weekend. Almost tit for tat. Merry Christmas!"

Gross admits he likely will not see his catalytic converters returned and insurance will only cover part of the nearly $9,000 replacement cost, but he is hopeful that whoever stole from his company is caught.

"I'd like to help find them a nice warm place this winter – in jail."

Newport News Police say they've taken nearly two dozens reports of catalytic converter thefts since August.
