Norfolk, Va. – Officials are warning Norfolk residents to take extra precautions after mosquito samples tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Two pools tested positive for the virus in two different Norfolk neighborhoods including Ingleside and North Shore Point.

The samples were collected on Thursday, July 24th from the Ingleside area. This community was fogged on July 26th.

Another sample was taken from North Shore Point on August 5th. This area was fogged the very next day.

Crews will continue mosquito control in these areas.

This includes storm drain treatments and backyard inspections.

Officials are especially advising people over 50 protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Some of the best ways to protect yourself includes wearing long, loose and light-colored clothing, limiting outdoor exposure between dusk and dawn, using insect repellents with DEET, turn over or remove containers where water may collect, get rid of standing water on tarps or flat roofs, clean out bird baths and pools, and clean roof gutters and downspout screens.
