Virginia Beach, Virginia – A 28-year-old man involved in a motorcycle crash last Friday has died as a result of his injuries.

Virginia Beach Police say Daniel J. Lewis was transported to a local hospital early Friday morning in critical condition after he struck the back of a vehicle while riding his motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

The crash occurred just before 2:00 a.m. in the 1200 block of General Booth Boulevard.

Police say an off-duty officer was driving northbound on General Booth in a 2011 Saab when he observed serveral on-duty officers investigating a disturbance in the southbound lanes.

The off-duty officer slowed down to ensure the safety of the investigating officers. As he determined that the investigating officers were okay, he noticed a motorcycle driven by Lewis approaching from behind at a high rate of speed.

The officer moved his Saab into the left turn lane in an attempt to avoid a collision but was struck from behind by the motorcycle.

Police say alcohol and speed were a contributing factor in the crash.

This case remains under investigation with officer E.R. King of the Department’s Fatal Crash Team as the lead investigator.
