Man charged in Newport News credit union robbery

Newport News, Va. – A man has been charged in the robbery of the Bayport Credit Union that happened Wednesday.

Police have charged 30-year-old Michael Anthony Collins of Brook Lane in York County.

Collins is charged with one count of robbery and was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at about 11:58 a.m.

Police responded to the reported robbery at the Bayport Credit Union located at 433 Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News.

The suspect entered the bank, presented a note demanding cash, and left with an undisclosed amount of money. He then got into a pickup truck parked in a nearby lot and left the scene.

Witnesses gave police a description of the suspect. The suspect description was then sent out to all police units. Shortly after the incident, officers located a pickup truck matching the description from the bank robbery in the area of Lee’s Mill and Charles Street in Newport News, Virginia. A traffic stop was then conducted.
