Virginia Beach, Va. - Crews with Virginia Natural Gas spent Saturday working on a gas leak that started Friday.

More than 800 customers were affected by the leak near the intersection of Lynnhaven and Centerville.

The leak has been sealed and the damaged eight inch gas line is fixed after crews worked overnight to replace the broken section.

They went door-to-door Saturday to turn the gas back on for everyone who was affected.

According to the Virginia Beach Fire Dept., the line was damaged when a contractor working on the Lynnhaven Parkway widening project hit the line while digging.

It shut down  major intersections and forced dozens of people out of their homes for several hours.

Daniel Gibson and his wife came back to their home when the all clear was given around 8:00 Friday night but didn't stay long.

"We got here and we could still smell gas, so we left," said Gibson.

When the family returned at 2:30 in the morning, crews were still working.

"They did a pretty good job of getting it done quickly. Lots of emergency people were out here making sure everything was safe," said Gibson.

No on was injured because of the gas leak.

According to officials with Virginia Natural Gas, they hope to have gas restored to everyone by Sunday.
