An 8-inch gas main has been sealed after leaking for several hours throughout Friday afternoon in Virginia Beach.
The intersection of Centerville Turnpike and Lynnhaven Parkway was shut down due to the leak, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
Units arrived at the scene and found a gas main that was leaking in a wooded area where digging had been going on as part of the Lynnhaven Parkway widening project.
Virginia Natural Gas says the outage on their system was related to third-party damage, affecting natural gas service to approximately 870 customers in the area.
Residents on Bizzone Circle and Blue Knob Road were asked to evacuate, as well as several residents on Beaufain Blvd. Magnolia Run Apartments were also inspected to determine whether there were any hazardous conditions in that area.
Saturday morning Virginia Natural Gas will need to enter impacted customers' homes to make sure all natural gas appliances are turned off. Later in the afternoon representatives from VNG will revisit each customer to turn their gas service on and relight appliances.
Virginia Natural gas representatives will be located throughout the impacted area on Saturday to answer questions and provide information to impacted customers.
