The Virginia Public Safety Foundation announced Wednesday that 25 additional Virginia heroes will be added to the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial in Richmond upon its completion. 21 of those names are Norfolk firefighters.

The memorial will contain 868 names of men and women who have died in the line of duty. They will be engraved on the memorial when it is constructed.

When the initial roster was released in December 2012, many of the cases were still being researched, which is why names are still continually being added.

“As we prepare to begin construction of the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial, I am mindful of how many Virginians impacted by line of duty deaths have been waiting for this moment, including so many families in my home of Norfolk,” said Paula Miller, VPSF President and Public Information Officer for Norfolk Sheriff’s Office. “The memorial will honor more Norfolk public safety officers—both police and firefighters—than those representing any other locality in Virginia.”
