Teen drowns at beach in Currituck County

Currituck Co., N.C. – A teen drowned at the beach in Currituck County over the weekend, according to the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.

On Saturday, June 28 at 4 p.m. several people were reportedly having trouble in the water around the 15 mile post near the “Old Tides Inn” area.

Bystanders were able to reach two of the swimmers and pull them to safety, but were unable to get to the third person, according to Sheriff Susan D. Johnson of Currituck County.

A search was conducted involving Corolla Ocean Rescue, VFD Stations 6 and 7, County EMS, and Currituck County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. on Monday, June 30 at mile post 13 and 1/2, the body of the swimmer was recovered and was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Greenville, North Carolina.

The victim has been identified as 16-year-old Thomas Harman of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.
