The Virginia Cavaliers found themselves in a place they always thought they should be - on the field in Omaha playing a title.

They played Vanderbilt in a best of three series.

In game one, the Cavs struck first when Derek Fisher singled to right center and scored two runs. However, in the third inning, Vanderbilt scored nine times capped by a Tyler Campbell bases clearing triple. The Cavs battled back but came up short and lost game one nine to eight.

In game two, the Wahoos were in the hole early when John Norwood doubled to left center and Zander Weil scored.

With the score tied at two, UVa broke out on top when Brandon Downes tripled to right center field. That scored Kelly Towns and Virginia went up four to two.

They won the second game seven to two and evened the series.

In game three, UVa felt the pressure early.
In the top of the first, Cavaliers' catcher Robbie Coman threw to second and the ball sailed over the second baseman's head in to centerfield, giving Vanderbilt a one-nothing lead.

Vandy extended the lead to two nothing in the top of the sixth inning when Vince Conde got an infield RBI single.

UVa answered in the bottom half of the inning when freshman shortstop Daniel Pinero drove in their first run of the game with a single to right field.

In the same inning, bases were loaded for the Cavaliers when Kenny Downs hit the ball into the hole and the Cavs tied it at two.

In the top of the eighth, John Norwood broke the hearts of Wahoo fans when he delivered the offering over the left field wall. Vandy was up three to two.

The bottom of the ninth inning, Virginia was down to their final out and Adam Ravenelle struck out Daniel Pinero to end the game

Vanderbilt won the National Championship and UVa is left to ponder what could have been.
