Nags Head, N.C.– A critically endangered juvenile Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle was found with a hook under his right eye by Network for Endangered Sea Turtle (N.E.S.T) volunteers on Tuesday.

The volunteers brought the injured turtle to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Islands Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center where the hook was carefully removed with no damage.

The turtle was later released later that day.

This was the first patient received by the STAR Center, which officially opens this Friday at noon.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Islands Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center opens this Friday. The STAR center has already rehabilitated and released its first patient-- a critically endangered juvenile Kemp's Ridley sea turtle.
