Norfolk, Va. – The command master chief of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70 has been relieved of his duties by the squadron’s commanding officer.

HSM-70 is currently deployed aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush in the Persian Gulf as part of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8. The squadron is based in Jacksonville, Florida.

Command Master Chief Roy B. Carter was relieved by Cdr. Peter Schnappauf III due to Carter’s unsatisfactory performance as the senior enlisted leader over an extended period of time, according to the Navy.

Carter has been reassigned to Commander, Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic in Mayport, Fla.

Kenneth Alvardo, command master chief for CVW-8, will assume Carter’s duties until a permanent relief is assigned.

HSM 70’s mission is to provide an MH-60R “Sea Hawk” helicopter squadron to operate from aircraft carriers and to provide detachments to air capable carrier strike group surface combatants.
