Norfolk, Va. – A Norfolk ninth grader claims the Champion title at the 2014 USA Boxing Junior Olympics.

According to Norfolk Recreation, Parks and Open Space, Keyshawn Davis competed in the pinweight division and walked away with the top prize at the competition held last week in Charleston, West Virginia.

Davis traveled to the competition along with teammate, Nick Sullivan, from the Norfolk Boxing Club. Sullivan also competed, but was eliminated in the first round.

Team Norfolk and US Olympic Boxing Coach Gloria Peek expressed “I am so proud of both Keyshawn and Nick. Every tournament is important, but a win at the open championship provides the opportunity to compete on the international level. Although they do not meet the age requirements for the 2016 Olympics, the opportunity to take part in international competitions would put them one step closer to competing in 2020. A goal of mine is for one of our boxers to make the Olympic team. Nick and Keyshawn might just be the ones to do it.”

Davis competed in three rounds throughout the tournament.  His defeat over Derry Edwards from Vacaville, Ca awarded him the winning title.
