Portsmouth, Va – A change-of-command ceremony was held Friday as Capt. Christopher S. Keane assumed command of Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads.

Keane spent the past two years as deputy at Sector Hampton Roads while Capt. John K. Little served as the sector commander. Little will go on to be chief of staff for the 9th Coast Guard District, based in Cleveland, Ohio as Keane relieves him.

Responsibilities as commander of the sector include operations in the ports and navigable waterways of the Atlantic coast from Maryland/Virginia border to the Virginia/North Carolina border and the commercial ports of Hampton Roads in Richmond.

Search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, homeland defense and military readiness, waterfront facility inspections, marine environmental protection and port safety and security are some of the many obligations of field commands and personnel assigned to Sector Hampton Roads.

Commander of the 5th Coast Guard District, Rear Adm. Stephen P. Metruck presided over the ceremony at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth.
