Norfolk, Va. - Just a few months ago, Officer Curtis Allison was being honored for his police work.

He was presented with the Bronze Medal of Valor by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce for how he handled a dangerous situation in November 2013.

Friday night, he once again found himself putting his life on the line.

NewsChannel 3 spoke to his grandmother over the phone Tuesday about what happened.

Allison had heard gunshots from his home nearby, and though off-duty at the time, she says he didn't hesitate to get to the scene.

The violent shooting ultimately claimed the lives of another officer and a 17-year-old and Officer Allison was wounded.

He's now at home with his wife and daughter, expected to make a full recovery.  It's not the first time his family has been faced with the dangers of his job.

A little over a year ago, he was severely injured when his police cruiser was hit head-on by another car.

He was injured so badly that he couldn't stand, but when another driver tried to come to his aid, his grandmother says Allison told them to check on the other car first.

Calling him "the family's hero and Norfolk's hero," his grandmother says they're extremely proud of him and thanking God he's still alive after what happened Friday.
