Norfolk, Va. – Norfolk health officials say a dog was almost bitten by a rabid fox in the Bayview South area of the city on Sunday.

They say this happened in the 1300 block of Tallwood Street in the Snug Harbor community.

They say the fox was trying to bite the dog through the fence but was stopped by a neighbor who put it down.

The fox was sent in for testing to the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond. The fox tested positive for rabies.

The dog did not have any visible wounds or marks and was up-to-date on vaccinations. He was given an additional booster as a preventative  measure and is now in quarantine.

If you’ve been exposed, call the Environmental Health Division of the Norfolk Health Department of Public Health at 757-683-2712.
