Thursday night Franchetta Ajibola was home cooking dinner anxiously waiting for her fiancé after hearing about a deadly truck accident earlier that day.

“I started calling him and when he did not return my calls I knew something was not right,” Ajibola told NewsChannel 3.

Daawuud Hakim never made it home. He was the driver of the 18 wheeler that hit a maintenance truck on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge before jack knifing and crashing into the water.

Hakim was employed as a contract driver for Big Daddy Drayage, according to police.

Ajibola believes the skid marks that she saw on photos and videos are where Hakim tried to avoid the workers on the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge and sacrificed himself to make sure no one else got hurt.

“That was him he would do that, he would do that for anybody," she said.

After the crash divers attempted to get Hakim out of the water but failed twice. The family stood by for two long days waiting for results. “We were just glued to the television listening to calls hoping that they would say they pulled him out."

Crews recovered his body 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

“That was the worst, the waiting the wondering, but finally we could put it at peace and bring him to peace," Ajibola said.

Franchetta says she is now preparing to bury the love of her life.
