Newport News, Va. - A Newport News father has been charged after burns were found on a young girl's body, police tell NewsChannel 3.
At about 10 p.m. on April 16 police responded to a home in the 700 block of Antrim Drive to a report of a small child being burned.
The responding officer found significant burns on the 10-month-old girl’s legs, feet, and buttocks.
Medics transported the child to an area hospital for treatment, police say.
The officer notified the department’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) and Child Protective Services (CPS). SVU launched an investigation which revealed that the child’s injuries were the result of hot water in the bathtub.
Police charged the child’s father with one count each of malicious assault and felony child abuse and neglect. He was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on May 9, 2014, at his home.
The father has been identified as 21-year-old Walter Clarence Blackman of the 700 block of Antrim Drive in Newport News.
Court documents say Blackman eventually confessed to a detective that he dunked his daughter in water, and left her there.
