Elizabeth City, NC - Officials say Sam Beamon, the former Elizabeth City State University police chief, was arrested on Friday.  District Attorney Andrew Womble, tells NewsChannel 3 that Beamon is charged with failing to discharge duties.

This comes after an investigation into 78 cases including sexual assaults state officials say he failed to investigate properly.

The district attorney says these cases started from January 2010 to May 2013. Many of these cases have been closed.

Beamon served as the university's police chief since 2004 and resigned in May of 2013.

If convicted, he could spend up to 120 days in jail.  This is a misdemeanor charge.

He will be in court on June 27th.
