Norfolk, Va. (WTKR) - An Ocean View business is defending their actions after neighbors say they damaged a sand dune.

On Monday, NewsChannel 3 reported on the dune in front of Great White Water Sports on Ocean View Avenue near Chesapeake Street.

Neighbors say the work had compromised the safety of dune, leaving their neighborhood vulnerable to flooding.

On Thursday, Great White Water Sports Operations Manager Thomas Williams told NewsChannel 3 that the work didn't damage the dune, but only cleared a long-established walkway leading from the business to the beach.

"This access point- this was not solid sand, this was not filled in. This access point was – basically we just cleared our boardwalk," Williams told NewsChannel 3 Todd Corillo.

He says his business understands the importance of the dunes and wouldn't  do anything to harm them.

"It would be counterproductive actually to do anything that would remove the dunes," Williams said.

Williams tells NewsChannel 3 that he's called the City of Norfolk to make sure they are in compliance and made this promise:

"If the city says jump, we’re going to say how high, because we want to work with the city. We want to work with the residents of Ocean View."
