There's an incredible sound coming out of Smithfield High School.  It's the school's jazz band under the direction of Aaron Hill.

He's led the band to win several awards,  including one for first place in a national competition.

Well now, thanks to one student. Hill's been singled out to win something, which is so appropriate since this week is National Teacher Appreciation Week.

Hannah Shoemaker is showing her appreciation of Hill by sending NewsChannel 3 an email. We asked her to read some of it before the jazz band class. "It is an impossible challenge to write down all of the wonderful things he has done. He really goes the extra mile when it comes to his students, more than any teacher or coach I've ever had. He is always there to lend an ear to a student in need or give advice to those who are seeking it."

Hill had no idea his bass player, Hannah Shoemaker sent us this email. This Army retiree, Hannah says, is teaching leadership in and out of the classroom.

"It's just how incredible the affect he has is. The action he takes for his community is not monetary, but it changes so many lives for the better." Hill admits he was working hard to fight back tears.

For his dedication in and out of the classroom, we presented him with a NewsChannel 3 People Taking Action award plus a $100 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.
