It has been revealed that an air traffic controller previously cited for contributing to a deadly mid-air collision over the Hudson River between a sightseeing helicopter and an airplane in 2008 is now working for air traffic control at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
The information was uncovered during an investigation by PIX 11 News in New York.
According to the report, Carlyle Turner now lives in Chesapeake.
The accident report from the National Transportation Safety Board states that Turner was holding a personal telephone conversation with another employee at Teterboro Airport while the crash took place. Nine people were killed.
Turner and an airport colleague reportedly had a conversation about a scheduled BBQ and a dead cat found earlier in the day on a runway.
The PIX 11 News investigation revealed that Turner wasn’t the only one still working in air traffic control after being involved in a deadly accident.
They say there are several other controllers involved in deadly crashes who are currently listed on the FAA’s online employment directory.
