Suffolk, Va. - The tornadoes reported in North Carolina on Friday reminded us of this date six years ago when a powerful tornado ripped through Suffolk.

April 28, 2008 is a day many of us will never forget – the day the terror of a tornado came home to Hampton Roads.

NewsChannel 3 was on the air and “in” the air to show just how much damage the April 2008 tornado did.

It slammed into two Suffolk neighborhoods – Hillpoint Farms and Burnett’s Mill, leveling a dozen houses.

200 people were treated for injuries, mostly from broken glass.

Even Obici Hospital had broken windows.

No one was killed, but many were terrified.

The tornado was first spotted in North Carolina and barreled for 75 miles, through Southampton County, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk and the lower Eastern Shore before it went out to sea.

What it left behind will never be forgotten by those who lived through it.

Thankfully, tornadoes like this are rare here. The last one before the Suffolk tornado was spawned by the remnants of Tropical Storm Denis nine years earlier.
