Last night's severe weather and possible tornadoes caused damage in several areas around Hampton Roads and North Carolina.

National Weather Service damage reports include sporadic damage along a 1.5 mile path near Jarvisburg from a possible tornado.

Minor structural damage to Jarvisburg Elementary School and a nearby church was reported with outbuildings at the church destroyed.

Boats were overturned at a hunting lodge along the Currituck Sound.

Red Cross volunteers are in Beaufort County providing shelter in partnership with county officials, at:

Snowd Branch Church of God
3283 Voa Rd,
Washington, NC 27889
Caseworkers and other Red Cross volunteers are available at the shelter to assist

Mobile feeding will begin in affected neighborhoods today. Red Cross teams will be delivering food in neighborhoods damaged by last night’s storms.

Red Cross teams are also surveying affected areas and providing assistance as needed in Perquimans, Chowan and Pasquotank Counties.

Pasquotank County officials say the county suffered significant damage last night from damaging straight line winds and what appear to be two separate tornadoes.

Many homes received major damage and numerous others were destroyed.  One person was transported to the hospital with a major trauma injury and four others with minor injuries.

Downed power lines throughout the area have created hazardous conditions and law enforcement has closed several roads within Elizabeth City and in the county.  Electric utilities have cautioned that all downed power lines should be treated as live, energized lines.

Damage assessment teams will be working in the affected areas early Saturday morning and emergency officials ask that the public stay out of these areas for their own safety and the safety of the workers.

Chowan County has also experienced damage in two areas of the county. The National Weather Service will make the determination of tornadic activity in Chowan County on Saturday.
