Today, a Norfolk-based sailor who risked his life to save another was be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

During the service, Mark Mayo's family was presented with a posthumous award in his honor.

The Navy awarded the 24-year-old with the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. It's the highest non-combat decoration award for heroism bestowed by the Navy.

It comes after Mayo's actions aboard the USS Mahan back in March. Mayo was fearless, when he stepped in front of the petty officer of the watch, saving her life - taking a bullet, just as civilian truck driver Jeffery Savage started shooting with the gun he wrestled away from her.

Both Savage and Mayo were killed in the gunfire.
