Emergency repairs to the sewer system closed the southbound traffic lanes of Warwick Boulevard at Woodhaven Road for the majority of Thursday.

The road reopened to traffic at 5:00 p.m.

HRSD crews responded to a small leak in a 24-inch pipeline under a southbound travel lane of Warwick Boulevard near Woodhaven Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were able to stop the leak Wednesday afternoon by diverting flows to other parts of the system. To make a permanent repair, it was necessary to close both lanes of traffic Thursday morning.

Crews finished the repair by mid-afternoon Thursday.

HRSD worked closely with the City of Newport News to establish the traffic control plan for the detour, according to Nancy L. Munnikhuysen, HRSD Chief of Communications.

Southbound traffic was detoured from Warwick Boulevard onto Industrial Park Drive, then onto Jefferson Avenue to Denbigh Boulevard and back onto Warwick Boulevard.
