A Pungo Pizza shop is taking action to prevent hunger for Virginia Beach students on the weekends.
"We didn't really go into it with a goal," says the restaurant's owner, Suzette Lynn. "We just went into it with the goal of raising as much money as we could."
All month, Pungo Pizza servers have been getting donations for Virginia Beach school's Beach Bags program.
Every Friday, students in need get a couple days worth of food to make sure they don't go hungry. NewsChannel 3 told you about the program in March, and how its shelves were nearly bare.
We loaded up a cart with enough food to feed 40 kids, then NewsChannel 3 donated $500. Pungo Pizza saw the need too, and so did its customers.
"They'll buy 5, 10, 20 worth; you can look around and see the different amounts people have purchased," Lynn said.
Monday, Pungo Pizza decided the $1,400 it already raised wasn't enough.
Ten percent of its sales Monday went to the program.
"I just went into it and tried to sell and push as much as I could," said waitress Shelby Wilkins.
