It’s duck race season again, and this year CHIP of South Hampton Roads is expanding the race from the “Chesapeake Rubber Duck Race” to the “Hampton Roads Rubber Duck Race.”

This is a big fundraiser for CHIP, a not-for-profit agency that provides health improvement services to families with children, prenatal through age six, to ensure that every child enters school healthy and ready to learn and succeed.

On April 26, thousands of rubber ducks will float down the Intracoastal Waterway in Chesapeake to win spectacular prizes for lucky duck participants.

The first place winner will receive a 2014 Nissan Versa. This is one of Hampton Roads’ signature family events – more than 2,000 participants from all around the region come out to cheer on their ducks and enjoy a day of fun activities, food, music, and games!

All proceeds benefit CHIP, which stands for Children's Health Investment Project.

Background on CHIP: The agency focuses on the critical first 2000 days of life, ensuring that we lay the foundation for a child’s future health, academic and workplace success.

CHIP’s staff of Community Health Nurses and Parent Educators provides its signature home visitation program in the cities of Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Norfolk and a “sleeptight” program that provides cribs to low income families throughout all of Hampton Roads.

• The 8th annual Rubber Duck Race will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., with the duck drop at approximately 2:15.

• The race has a new name this year: the Hampton Roads Rubber Duck Race, which reflects the service area of CHIP (Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth).

• The Presenting Sponsor is Ashley Furniture HomeStore, and the Grand Prize of 2014 Nissan Versa is courtesy of Hall Automotive, A MileOne Company.

• Events include food, games, and music - something for kids of all ages.

• The Duck Dazzle contest remains open. Entrants show their “duck-a-tude” by decorating a duck that exhibits their personal style, supports their favorite team, denotes their profession, etc. Ducks are $35 each.
