ROCKFORD, Ill. — A perfect game in bowling is 300, but Andrew Cowen set a record last week with a single-game score of 280.
By rolling the entire game backward.
That broke the previous mark of 278set by James Cripps of Clarksville, Tenn., in December 2006.
Cowen impressively picked up a one-pin spare in the second frame, then rolled 10 consecutive strikes.
Cowen has rolled a 300 game the conventional way before switching.
“Nobody’s thrown a 300 (backward), and I figured it would be a interesting challenge to throw that way,” he said. “And it helps because my knees aren’t in the best shape, and when I throw backwards it doesn’t really affect my knee because there’s no knee bend.”
The unique style also draws plenty of eyes at the alley.
“That’s probably the best part of bowling (backward),” Cowen said. “It’s a lot of fun. A lot of people come down and say, ‘Hey, that’s really neat. What’s going on? How do you do it?’”
