Your ride to work is about to get a lot smoother

You wanted them gone and now, VDOT is implementing their permanent solution to get rid of those pesky potholes for good.

But in order to get there, drivers will have to be ready for some inconveniences. The 18-month project kicks off tonight and continues until November of 2015! Covering 163 lane miles with an additional 5 inches of asphalt is no easy task.

It will require lane closures every night of the work week. Just in time for rush hour, VDOT doesn`t want to make our normal nightmare commutes any worse. Still, weekend closures might be needed.

VDOT promised they wouldn`t close any lanes during special events or major holidays, like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Labor Day.

But with more people on the roads during tourist season and while this work is needed, it`s also risky.

At least three VDOT workers were injured last summer during the pothole patching blitz, mowed over by drivers who weren`t paying attention to lane closures and work zones.
