Newport News, Va. – Two men are facing numerous drug charges after a traffic stop in Newport News.

On March 27, 2014 at about 11:15 p.m., police initiated a traffic stop for equipment violation in the area of Colony Road and Warwick Blvd.

As officers approached the vehicle on foot, the officer on the passenger side saw a firearm under the passengers’ side seat.

Neither the driver, 28-year-old Brandon Robinson of Newport News, nor his passenger, 33-year-old Michael Vanhook of Newport News, possessed a concealed handgun permit, police say.

The firearm was seized and returned stolen out of Hampton.

Robinson was summonsed for driving without a license, and charged with possession of a stolen firearm. Vanhook was charged with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

On March 28, 2014, a K-9 Narcotics dog made a positive hit for narcotics on a large sum of cash, which was hidden on Vanhook. That investigation led officers to a local motel room rented by Vanhook, where officers found an unattended 13-year-old boy. The teen has been identified as a relative of Vanhook. Drug paraphernalia was in plain view inside the motel room.

Police searched the room and seized crack cocaine as well as materials for processing and packaging narcotics.

Additional warrants for drug possession with the intent to manufacture/sell and child neglect were served.

Child Protective Services was notified, and the 13-year-old was released to relatives who came to the scene.
