The Navy has added additional screenings of all delivery drivers presenting a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) for base access.

The additional screenings were ordered by Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Rear Adm. Dixon R. Smith following the March 24th shooting death of a sailor at Naval Station Norfolk by a civilian who gained access to the base using a TWIC.

With the new screenings, anyone presenting a Department of Homeland Security issued TWIC will be checked with the National Crime Information Center database for any criminal history or outstanding warrants that are grounds for denial.

This includes felony convictions within the last ten years; misdemeanor convictions within the last five years for crimes of violence; larceny; drugs; habitual offenders; and conviction for sex offenses.

Prior to the shooting, drivers possessing the TWIC were not subject to this additional screening.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service continues to investigate the shooting.
