Kill Devil Hills, NC - North Carolina is looking to ground its motto, "First in Flight."

The Brand NC Project's aim is to create a new state identity, drawing on the Tar Heel's state natural beauty and culture.

"It's a good name, better than Ohio birthplace of aviation or whatever they have," said Casey Coats of Kill Devil Hills. "We're the first and the best."

Getting rid of "First in Flight" would push the Outer Banks out of the state's slogan.

"Yeah, it's a great slogan. It fits our state and I don't see a need to change it," said Tom Patro of Duck.

North Carolina's project that's trying to emulate the success of its northern neighbor's "Virginia is for Lovers" campaign.

"I don't think they'll ever come up with a single motto for the whole state because the state is too versified," Patro said.

Brand NC is taking submissions from people until Tuesday. The winner will receive $2,000.
