UPDATE: The NTSB has determined that the pilot, who was trying to land in gusty winds on the day of the crash, did not control the airplane.

The pilot says the engine was at “near idle” as he turned for his final approach.

He says a wind gust caught him and the aircraft sank. He tried to level the plane and apply power, but he ended up crashing into the trees.

Kill Devil Hills, N.C. – Two people were taken to the hospital Sunday after the plane they were in crashed near the southern end of the First Flight Airport runway.

Officials say the Allegro 2000 single-engine plane went down behind the 100 block of Partridge Trail.  It was reported to authorities just before 11 a.m.  The area where the crashed occurred is on National Park Service land behind the Baum Bay neighborhood.

One person was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital.  The other was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with head injuries.

The FAA will be at the site Monday to investigate the crash.  Park rangers have secured the scene until then.
