Portsmouth, Va. - A group of middle schoolers went on a tour to several Portsmouth families to show them the importance of raising oysters.

Saturday, the students from Waters Middle School visited three families in their local community for help with their project for the 2014 Wheelabrator Environment Symposium of raising oysters to help improve the environment in our local rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

The students gave the residents oysters and oyster floats they constructed and taught the families about environmental consciousness and the importance of oysters in waterways.

“The children are learning the importance of oysters to provide habitats and filter out impurities in the water in our local rivers and the Chesapeake Bay,” says science teacher Sherrye Pollard. “Our hope is that the knowledge these families gain from our students will spread to the rest of the community and increase awareness and environmental consciousness.”

This is the fifth year the school has participated in the Symposium.
